Description: Small unicells, 3-5 &m in diam.; cell wall of 8 plates - 4 small round plates (shield plates), and 4 triradiate plates. Plates papillate or striate. Shield plates may have everted rims. Ultrastructure presumably as in Triparma. Reproduction has not been observed to date. A common marine genus of the Parmales, which contains planktonic marine cells with cell walls composed of a small number of siliceous plates of various shapes all fitting together edge to edge. The genera Triparma and Pentalamina are closely related to Tetraparma. Tetraparma occurs with Triparma in waters of the open ocean and near ice-influenced coasts. Major populations occur in the subarctic Pacific and Antarctic oceans and in coastal Newfoundland waters. Related forms with smooth plates have been observed in deep waters and sediments of the Pacific Ocean (Silver and others (1980), Stradner and Allram (1982)). Variations in plate form illustrated in Marchant and McEldowney (1986). Emend. Konno & Jordan 2007: 110.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
