Acrosorium Zanardini ex Kützing, 1869
Holotype species: Acrosorium aglaophylloides Zanardini ex Kützing
Currently accepted name for the type species: Acrosorium ciliolatum (Harvey) Kylin
Original publication and holotype designation: Kützing, F.T. (1869). Tabulae phycologicae; oder, Abbildungen der Tange. Vol. XIX pp. i-iv, 1-36, 100 pls. Nordhausen: Gedruckt auf kosten des Verfassers (in commission bei W. Köhne).
Description: Thallus made up of small erect laminae, the basal ones are decumbent or prostrate fixed by hapters scattered on the lower surface and each consisting of a band of multicellular rhizoids. The laminae are delicate, with a membranous consistency, monostromatic, they become tristromatic (rarely with multiple layers) near the base, irregularly lobed with rounded endings, often strongly curved, branched at the margins which are entire or irregularly serrated. Grains present branched microscopic ones, macroscopic ones absent. Growth by marginal cells undergoing oblique divisions; intercalary meristems are also present. The plastids are parietal, numerous, discoidal or bacilliform. Dioecious gametophytes. Spermatocysts in sori in the upper parts of the laminae. The procarps, scattered on both faces of the lamina, consist of the supporting cell which carries a first group of 1-3 sterile cells, the curved carpogonial branch of 4 cells and a second group of 1-2 sterile cells. The cystocarps, with a large fusion cell, a very branched gonimoblast and with single and terminal carposporocysts, they are ostiolate and have a pericarp of 3-4 layers of cells. Tetrasporocysts grouped in relatively large sori produced in the upper parts of the laminae or in marginal proliferations.

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
