Caloglossa (Harvey) G.Martens, 1869, nom. cons.

Holotype species: Caloglossa leprieurii (Montagne) G.Martens

Original publication and holotype designation: Martens, G. von (1869). Beiträge zur Algen-Flora Indiens. Flora 52: 233-238.

Description: Thallus prostrate, membranous, regularly subdichotomously branched. Axes slightly to markedly constricted at the nodes, attached by rhizoids arising from the midrib at the nodes; adventitious branches common, arising from the midrib. Structure uniaxial, with a prominent midrib and lateral blades 1 cell thick, growth leading by exogenous branching pattern, in which each apical cell cuts off two oblique subapical cells before cutting off lateral pericentral cells; lateral veins absent; only some cells of second-order cell rows producing third-order rows; apical cells of all cell rows reaching the margin of the thallus; intercalary divisions absent. Spermatangia in sori on terminal and subterminal segments, on both surfaces of the blade, covering the whole of the blade with the exception of the marginal cells, some lateral cells and all transverse pericentral cells. Procarps and cystocarps sessile, forming on the midrib. Tetrasporangia in sori on alae on both sides of the midrib, forming in series on the adaxial surface of secondary cell rows, the bearing cell producing cover cells transversely, tetrahedrally divided.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
