Holotype species: Tiffaniella saccorhiza (Setchell & N.L.Gardner) Doty & Meñez
Original publication and holotype designation: Doty, M.S. & Meñez, E.G. (1960). Tiffaniella, a new genus in the Ceramiales. Transactions of the American Microscopical Society 79(2): 135-144, 14 figs.
Description: Thallus filamentous, ecorticate, with prostrate and sparingly branched erect axes. Prostrate axes with frequent rhizoids, in some species these modified with digitate ends or swollen throughout. Erect filaments unbranched or dichotomously branched; cells multinucleate. Spermatangia arising in pedicellate heads of various shapes, usually borne on shortened laterals. Procarps on short fertile axes; subapical cell with 3 pericentral cells (supporting cell, fertile pericentral cell and sterile pericentral cell); supporting cell with a 4-celled carpogonial branch and a sterile terminal cell. Post-fertilisation 2 auxiliary cells cut off from each of the supporting and fertile pericentral cells. Cystocarps with carposporangia forming from 2 auxiliary cells fused to cells of the fertile axis, forming a T-shaped fusion cell; involucre lacking. Tetrasporangia tetrahedrally or polyhedrally (8–64 spores) divided.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
