Callophycus Trevisan, 1848
Holotype species: Callophycus dorsiferus (C.Agardh) P.C.Silva
Original publication and holotype designation: Trevisan, V.B.A. (1848). Saggio di una monografia delle Alghe Coccotalle. pp. 1-112. Padova [Padua]: coi tipi del seminario.
Description: Plants of the largest species reach 30 cm in length. Thalli are erect from a crustose base and are complanate to flattened, linear, more or less pinnately branched, and multiaxial. Each axial cell gives rise to a single periaxial filament. Fertilized carpogonia emit numerous connecting filaments, and the basal cell of the 3-5 celled carpogonial branch may bear sterile laterals. Cystocarps consist of a lengthy fusion cell composed of the cortical-cell lineage proximal to the auxiliary cell, as well as the auxiliary cell and early gonimoblasts, surrounded by radiating, often few in number, sterile gonimoblasts bearing chains or small clusters of carposporangia. Sterile gonimoblast filaments also issue from the inner gonimoblasts and grow to fuse with cells of the surrounding pericarp, which is usually devoid of, or only rudimentarily develops, a filamentous hull. Spermatangia form in clusters of 2-4 mother cells surrounding a subsurface bearing cell and are often separated from adjacent clusters by cattered unmodified outer cortical cells. Tetrasporangia are basally attached.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.
Gender: This genus name is currently treated as masculine.
Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Dumilag, R.V., Nelson, W.A. & Kraft, G.T. (2019). Validation and phylogenetic placement of the Placentophoraceae fam. nov. (Gigartinales, Rhodophyta). Phycologia 58(3): 269-275, 13 figs.
Comments: Distribution: The type and 6 other species are endemic to the southern half of Australia. Four are recorded from eastern to southern Africa, and one, C. serratus (Harvey ex Kutzing) Silva, is widely distributed in the western Pacific Ocean from the Philippines to northern Australia. Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
