Acrocytis Rosenvinge, 1933
Holotype species: Acrocytis groenlandicus Rosenvinge
Original publication and holotype designation: Rosenvinge, L. K. (1933). Marine algae from Kangerdlugssuak. Meddelelser om Grønland 104(8): [1-4]-5-14.
Description: This genus is incompletely known as the type material is sterile. Its vegetative characteristics are a large, vaulted apical cell, a segmented parenchymatous macrothallus, scattered branches with long intervals between them, and presence of distally branched or unbranched rhizoidal filaments. The frequent formation of rhizoidal filaments may reflect that the type material is loose-lying composed of entangled masses including also Sphacelaria plumosa, Chordaria flagelliformis, and fragments of Ptilota serrata. In Rosenvinge's (1933) opinion the genus is intermediary between Sphacelaria and Stictyosiphon. In the literature a "large type" of Sphacelaria arctica is also mentioned and this shows according to Prud'homme van Reine (1982) similarity to Acrocytis.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
