The type species (holotype) of the genus Udotea is Udotea flabellum (J.Ellis & Solander) M.Howe.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Rhipocephalus phoenix (J.Ellis & Solander) Kützing.

Type Information
Type locality: "... found on the coast of the Bahama Islands."; (Ellis & Solander 1786: 126) Lectotype (Ellis and Solander1786 pl. 25, fig. 2; designated by Gepp & Gepp 1905: 4): Notes: Gepp & Gepp (1905: 4) note "The type of Rhipocephalus Phoenix is not longer in existence, but there is a satisfactory figure of it in Ellis and Solander's Natural History of Zoophytes (1786), p. 126, tab. 25, fig. 2, under the name Corallina Phoenix. It has flabella of about 15 mm long.
