Type locality: San Agustín [Pacific Mexico]; (Silva & al. 1996: 588) Lectotype: LD; 49049a (De Clerck 2003: 166) Notes: De Clerck (2003) notes that lectotypification was established by Nizamuddin & Gerloff (1979:867) who erroneously cited the specimen as LD 49042a. The specimen bears the number LD 49049a.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), crenulate, having small rounded teeth (Stearn 1983).

Taxonomic note
Tronholm & al. (2013) showed that specimens of Dictyota crenulata from the Atlantic Ocean were genetically distinct from those in the eastern Pacific, thus resurrecting the name D. jamaicensis for the former. - (14 June 2021) - Craig Schneider
Distributional note
This species is presently known only from the Pacific coast of Central America. Atlantic specimens referred to this species in the past are now assigned to Dictyota jamaicensis W.R.Taylor (Tronholm & al. 2013). - (04 April 2013) - Craig Schneider
