Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyota is Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyota friabilis Setchell.

Type locality: "Colombia: Departamento Bolívar: Islas del Rosario, Isla Grande, Punta Brava, creciendo sobre rocas y Halimeda op1tntia (L.) Taxonomic note
Wysor & De Clerck (2003) suggest that D. pfaffii is synonymous with D. friabilis. Previously, Bula-Meyer (1994: 177-181) reduced D. humifusa to a synonym of D. pfaffii, an opinion, which is not supported in this study. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
