The type species (holotype) of the genus Acetabularia is Acetabularia acetabulum (Linnaeus) P.C.Silva.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Parvocaulis polyphysoides (P.Crouan & H.Crouan) S.Berger & al. ex J.N.Norris & D.L.Ballantine.
