The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Boreolithothamnion glaciale (Kjellman) P.W.Gabrielson, Maneveldt, Hughey & V.Peña.

Finmark: Vardö (INA). Woelkerling (1993:233) designated as lectotype the specimen illustrated by Printz (1929: pl. 32, figs 12) (Peña et al., 2021: 10).
