The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyosphaerium is Dictyosphaerium ehrenbergianum Nägeli.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Mucidosphaerium sphagnale (Hindak) C.Bock, Proschold & Krienitz.

Type locality: Poland: Czarwiony near Nowy Targ, in peat bog; (Index Nominum Algarum) Holotype: Fig. 105: 1 in Hindak 1980: Cryopreserved material of the authentic strain CCAP 222/ 93 (see below) (epitype) (Bock et al. 2011: 642) Notes: Epitype designated by Bock et al. (2011: 642); deposited at the Culture Collection of Algae and Protozoa, Oban Scotland. Iconotype: 22: 6 (Index Nominum Algarum).
