The type species (lectotype) of the genus Staurastrum is Staurastrum paradoxum Meyen ex Ralfs.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Staurastrum boergesenii Raciborski.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), stellate, with narrow divisions radiating from the center like the rays of a star (Stearn 1973).
