The type species (lectotype) of the genus Laurencia is Laurencia obtusa (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ohelopapa flexilis (Setchell) F.Rousseau, Martin-Lescanne, Payri & L.Le Gall.
