Nomenclatural note
"It is now two years since I received excellent specimens of this highly beautiful plant, collected in Devonshire by my esteemed friend Mrs. Griffiths : as few persons are so well acquainted with the actual vegetation of marine Algae, her opinion in favour of its being an undescribed species must be allowed to have great weight. Besides however studying the preserved specimens, I had an opportunity of examining some in their native place of qrowth at Torquay a few weeks ago, and thus I am enabled to add my opinion to hers in support of their distinctness." (Greville 1827: 339). - (06 December 2023) - M.D. Guiry
Taxonomic note
"GREVILLE (1826: 339) originally described this species based on specimens collected from the Ionian Sea as well as from England. Based on both ARDISSONE (1875) and DE TONI (1903) this species should be referred to a Nitophyllum species." (Tsiamis & Panoytidis 2016: 242)."This species was described by Greville (1827: 339) on specimens collected at Torquay (Devonshire, UK) and at the Ionian Islands of Greece. The ancient Mediterranean authors considered it as a synonym of different taxa today treated as synonyms of N. punctatum (see in this note at the entries: A. delicatulum; A. ocellatum var. ocellatum and var. delicatulum)." (Cormaci & al. 2023: 492). - (06 December 2023) - M.D. Guiry
