The type species (lectotype) of the genus Fragilaria is Fragilaria pectinalis (O.F.Müller) Lyngbye.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Nitzschia westiorum D.E. Kellogg, Stuiver, T.B.Kellogg & Denton.
