Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Fragilaria is Fragilaria pectinalis (O.F.Müller) Lyngbye.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Fragilaria aequalis Heiberg.

Type locality: Viborg sø, Jylland, Denmark; (Tuji & Williams 2019: 271) Holotype: Østrup, 1910, pl. 5, fig. 121 = fig. 35 in Tuji & Williams 2008): slide designated lectotype by Lange-Bertalot in Krammer & Lange-Bertalot 1991 [2000]: 450, taf. 110, figs 19-21, see Tuji & Williams 2008, figs 31-34 (epitype) C. Wesenberg-Lund (W.-Ld); Østrup collection; C 3601 (Tuji & Williams 2019: 271) Notes: According to Tuji & Williams (2019: 271) the lectotype designated by Lange-Bertalot (in Krammer & Lange-Bertalot, 1991: 450) should be considered an epitype. Secondary epitype (designated by Tuji & Williams, 2019: 271) = Tuji & Williams 208, fig. 32; raw material 148.1 (Østrup collection in C, see Tuji & Williams 2008, figs 36-42).
