Nomenclatural note
cf. Thuret & Bornet 1878, as U. lactuca (Index Nominum Algaruam). Lipkin & Silva (2002: 54) note that Foyn (1955) cited differences between U. lactuca plants of the Mediterranean and southern European Atlantic coasts and those of England and northern European Atlantic coasts and that he suggested the name U. thuretii for the former. However, this name is invalid since he failed to provide a Latin description or designate a type specimen. - (16 June 2010) - G.M. Guiry
Taxonomic note
According to Lipkin & Silva (2002: 54), Bliding (1969: 554) showed that U. thuretii Foyn is conspecific with U. rigida C. Agardh. - (16 June 2010) - G.M. Guiry
