The type species (lectotype) of the genus Conferva is Conferva rupestris Linnaeus.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Acrocladus battersii (C.Hoek) Boedeker.

Nomenclatural note
Conferva refracta Roth was superfluous when published (Roth 1800: 193) and hence illegitimate because its protologue included the citation of C. hirta Müller in Vahl (1787: 7), a name of uncertain application (Furnari et al., 1999). The next valid use of the binomial Cladophora refracta was probably Kützing (1843), q.v. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
