Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Peridinium is Peridinium cinctum (O.F.Müller) Ehrenberg.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Protoperidinium grahamii (Sournia) Balech.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), truncate, i.e., ending very abruptly as if cut straight across (Stearn 1973).
