Taxonomic note
"Wilce et al. (2009: 283), treated, with no
remarks, P. bertholdii as a synonym of P. pustulosum.
We prefer to maintain P. bertholdii
distinct from P. pustulosum on the basis of the
following characters indicated by Kuckuck
(1895: 186): diameter of vegetative filaments 4-
10 µm (10-18 µm in P. pustulosum); diameter of
phaeophycean hairs 6-9 µm (7-10 µm in P.
pustulosum); plurilocular cysts 6-14 µm (20-35
µm in P. pustulosum). Moreover, phaeophycean
hairs of P. bertholdii, differently from P. pustulosum,
are lacking of a long cell under the
meristematic zone (Kuckuck, 1895b: fig. 2A)." (Cormaci et al. 2012: 213). - (27 August 2015) - M.D. Guiry
