Taxonomic note
According to Fletcher (1987) and Parente et al. (2003), "Microspongium gelatinosum" is considered to be the sporophytic stage of Scytosiphon lomentaria, although Wynne (1969) observed Ralfsia-like crusts as the associated stage of Pacific thalli of S. lomentaria (Peña & Bárbara 2010). Parente et al. (2003) suggest that California S. lomentaria may need to be re-examined. Fletcher (2024: 343) included this name in synonym with Microspongium globosum Reinke as "Microspongium gelatinosum Reinke (1888a), p. 20 (pro. part. with plurilocular sporangia)". - (05 May 2010) - G.M.
