Taxonomic note
"According to Fletcher (1987: 86, fig. 3)
Pseudolithoderma roscoffense Loiseaux shows a
marked similarity with P. adriaticum. In fact he
stated that "...It seems possible, therefore, that
Lithoderma adriaticum Hauck sensu Hamel is
conspecific with Pseudolithoderma roscoffense
Loiseaux, although such a connection was not
discussed by Loiseaux (1968)...". However, he
concluded that further studies were necessary,
and in particular on the Mediterranean type material,
before to propose the synonymy between
these two taxa. On the contrary, according to Verlaque
(1988) these species are distinct in: i. thickness
of the thallus (up to 260 µm in P. adriaticum vs
up to 1000 µm in P. roscoffense); ii. diameter
and lenght of the cells of erect filaments [diameter:
(9.5) 12-16 (20) µm in P. adriaticum, 10-
15 µm in P. roscoffense; length: (6) 9-16 (19)
µm in P. adriaticum, 5-8 µm in P. roscoffense]." (Cormaci et al. 2012: 416). - (27 August 2015) - M.D. Guiry
