Taxonomic note
"Ribera et al. (1992) reported C. costata v. costata from Sicily, the Adriatic Sea and Algeria. However, since: i. from a check of herbarium specimens we can confirm that Sicilian specimens belong to C. costata var. mediterranea; ii. from the Adriatic Sea were recorded only Sporochnus dichotomus Zanardini, C. cabrerae (Clemente) Kützing and C. costata v. dichotoma Feldmann that according to Feldmann (1932) should be all referred to C. costata v. mediterranea; iii. reports from Algeria by Boudouresque & Perret-Seridi (1989) as "C. costata (C. costata v. mediterranea included)", are probably to be referred to only C. costata v. mediterranea; iv. Rindi et al. (2002) confirmed that in both Islands and continental Tuscany coast only C. costata v. mediterranea occurs, v. the Mediterranean reports as C. costata or C. cabrerae all predate the description of the variety "mediterranea"; it is highly probable that the occurrence of C. costata v. costata in the Mediterranean Sea is limited to Spanish coast close to the Straits of Gibraltar on the basis of records by Flores-Moya et al. (1995) and Báez et al. (2001)." (Cormaci et al. 2012: 440). - (27 August 2015) - M.D. Guiry
