The type species (holotype) of the genus Melobesia is Melobesia membranacea (Esper) J.V.Lamouroux.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Choreonema thuretii (Bornet) F.Schmitz.

Bornet; 31 December 1855; on Jania squamata; PC; unnumbered, Thuret-Bornet Herbarium (algal fascicle 130, filed under Choreonema), includes one unnumbered slide; designated by Woelkerling, 1987: 113 (Chamberlain & Irvine 1994: 34) Notes: This type locality was first described by Woelkerling (1987a: 113). Extra information in Woelkerling (1998: 381). Thuret cited "Harvey, Phycologia Britannica, tab. CCI, fig. 5-8."
