Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Sphaerococcus is Sphaerococcus coronopifolius Stackhouse.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Prionitis sternbergii (C.Agardh) J.Agardh.

Source of Synonymy
Gabrielson, P.W. (2008). Molecular sequencing of Northeast Pacific type material reveals two earlier names for Prionitis lyallii, Prionitis jubata and Prionitis sternbergii, with brief comments on Grateloupia versicolor (Halymeniaceae, Rhodophyta). Phycologia 47: 89-97.

Type locality: 'In mari Australi' [Nootka Sound (Vancouver Island), British Columbia, Canada or Monterey, California, USA]; (Gabrielson 2008: 91, 96) Lectotype: T. Haenke; 1791; LD; 22892 (bottom, single specimen) (Gabrielson 2008: 96) Notes: Isotype: LD 22892 (upper two specimens) and specimens in the packet on the same sheet.

Eponomy
Named for Kaspar Maria von Sternberg (1761-1838) who established the Bohemian National Museum in Prague and is deemed to be the founder of modern paleobotany
