The type species (lectotype) of the genus Sphaerococcus is Sphaerococcus coronopifolius Stackhouse.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Prionitis sternbergii (C.Agardh) J.Agardh.

Haenke; 1791; LD; 22892 (bottom, single specimen) (Gabrielson 2008: 96) Notes: Isotype: LD 22892 (upper two specimens) and specimens in the packet on the same sheet.
Eponomy
Named for Kaspar Maria von Sternberg (1761-1838) who established the Bohemian National Museum in Prague and is deemed to be the founder of modern paleobotany
