Taxonomic note
"Polysiphonia nana Kützing. This species was described from Naples (Italy) by Kützing (1849: 897). It should be noted that Kützing himself (1863: 10, pl. 29 / e-f), described and illustrated from the "sinu tabulari" (= Table Bay, a locality just north of the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa) P. nana (Kg. nov. spec.) (sic!) nom. illeg., because later homonym of P. nana previously described by himself in 1849 from Naples (Italy). Both Falkenberg (1879: 276) and Ardissone (1883: 420) reported Kützing's species described in 1863 among the synonyms of Taenioma macrourum while Bornet (1892: 297) and De Toni (1900: 732) listed it, together with T. macrourum, among the synonyms of T. perpusillum. Papenfuss (1944: 205), after a study of the genus Taenioma concluded, unlike Bornet (op. cit.) and De Toni (op. cit.), that: i. T. perpusillum and T. macrourum are two distinct species; ii. if Polysiphonia nana Kützing from South Africa (not yet examined by himself) had been confirmed as a species of Taenioma [previously considered as such by Falkenberg (op. cit.), then the epithet nana would have had nomenclatural priority over macrourum. Eight years later Papenfuss (1952: 179) confirmed the synonymy between P. nana and T. macrourum and proposed the new combination T. nanum (Kützing) Papenfuss." (Cormaci & al. 2023: 561). - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
