The type species (holotype) of the genus Chantransia is Chantransia nigricans De Candolle.

Syntype localities: "One Marine Algae [probably Swansea, Wales]; Rev. Hugh Davies. Bantry Bay [Co Cork, Ireland]; Miss [Ellen] Hutchins. At Brighton [Sussex, England] Mr [William] Borrer; (Dillwyn 1809: 73) Lectotype: BM; (Dixon & Irvine 1977: 90) Notes: Dixon & Irvine (1977: 90) mention a lectotype at BM which was probably collected at Beaumaris, Anglesey, Wales, where the Rev. Davies lived from 1801 (Wikipedia).
