Description
The thalli range in height to 700 mm and are attached to rock substrata by a conical holdfast which consists of layers of tubular haptera. The stipe is stout, slightly flattened, and twisted at the base . The stipe extends from approx. 40-150 mm in height. The fronds are narrow (1-7(-9) mm) and strap-like (250-550 mm long). The inner margin of the blades is smooth, and the outer margin is toothed in the lower region although it is mainly entire . Juvenile thalli (Fig . 3) produce leafy laterals which are short and broad . There are no vesicles in this species . The receptacles are stipitate, terete, and may grow to 15 mm in length. They are found clustered at the base of fronds, as a fringe along the inner margin . Both male and female structures have been observed in sections of conceptacles and some conceptacles appear to be unisexual . It is not clear whether they are always hermaphrodite or whether there ar e differences in the timing of maturation of oogonia and antheridia so that they are functionally unisexual.
