Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Cystoseira is Cystoseira concatenata (Linnaeus) C.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gongolaria susanensis (Nizamuddin) Molinari & Guiry.

Taxonomic note
"Nizamuddin (1985) described this species as caespitose. However, we agree with Cormaci et al. (1992) and Alongi et al. (1999) in considering it as pseudocaspitose in having a short cauloid that early produces some secondary cauloids." (Cormaci et al. 2012: 366). - (26 August 2015) - M.D. Guiry

Undisturbed and pristine site; in upper sublittoral zone (1 m depth), epilithic on rocky semi-exposed shore, associated with Ceramium spp., Cystoseira compressa, Haliptilon virgatum and Osmundea sp. (Tsiamis et al. 2010). - (29 April 2011) - G.M. Guiry
