The type species (lectotype) of the genus Cladophora is Cladophora oligoclona (Kützing) Kützing.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Cladophoropsis membranacea (Bang ex C.Agardh) Børgesen.

Taxonomic note
According to Leliaert & Coppejans (2006), Cladophora modensis is probably referable to Cladophora coelothrix Kützing. They note that the location of the type material could not ascertained, but examinination of one specimen identified as C. modonensis from the type locality and of the drawings based on the authentic material by Kützing (1854: 14, table 68A) have led to the above conclusion. - (13 December 2006) - G.M.
