Nomenclatural note
"arbuscula" [a small tree] is a noun in apposition and is not declinable; so it is not correctable to "Carbusculum". Lawson & John (1987) cite this species as Gelidium arbuscula (Montagne) Børgesen. According to Lawson & John (1987) Bory is often cited as the authority for this species although there is no evidence that he ever provided a description of it. They also note that Børgesen (1927), who examined Bory's material, believed it to be the same plant described by Montagne (1839-1841) as Gelidium corneum var. nereideum and that, therefore, Børgesen appears to be the authority for making the combination Gelidium arbuscula based on this variety of G. corneum. - (11 May 2006) - G.M.
