Nomenclatural note
Cormaci, Furnari & Alongi (2021: 173) treat this as a "taxon inquirendum" commenting: "According to Saunders & Lehmkuhl (2005: 310) this species is very similar to the N European species P. nanum G.W. Saunders et Lehmkuhl, from which it differs only in the number of ramuli alternating in series of 2-4 (4-6 in P. nanum). According to Saunders et Lehmkuhl (op. cit.: 310) a molecular study of P. mediterraneum should be needed to clarify relationships between this species and P. nanum from N Europe." - (13 August 2021) - M.D. Guiry
