The type species (lectotype) of the genus Fucus is Fucus vesiculosus Linnaeus.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Polyides rotunda (Hudson) Gaillon.

Lectotype locality: [Unknown location][icon in] "Kongel. Norske Vidensk. Selsk. Skr. (Copenhagen) 4: t. 7. 1768"; (Jørgensen 2012: 1091) Epitype: TRH; Specimen 311.1 (without further data) in herb. Gunnerus (Jørgensen 2012: 1091) Notes: "Gunnerus did not refer to any specimen, but to an illustration to be published in “Acta Nidros.” (Kongelige Norske Videnskabers Selskabs Skrifter) IV (1768) (there inscribed Fucus furcellatus), which I here designate as lectotype. I also designate a specimen (311.1) in his herbarium, without any data, as epitype (the same specimen that Drew, 1958 regarded as the holotype)." (Jørgensen 2012: 1091).
