The type species (lectotype) of the genus Fragilaria is Fragilaria pectinalis (O.F.Müller) Lyngbye.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Fragilaria tenera var. nanana (Lange-Bertalot) Lange-Bertalot & S.Ulrich.
