Nomenclatural note
The name Ulva latissima L. , upon which Ulva lactuca var. latissima is based, has traditionally been misapplied to representatives of the genus with very broad, sheet-link fronds, whereas the type is referable to Laminaria saccharina (L.) Lamouroux (see Silva, 1952: 295; Papenfuss, 1960: 303). European records are apparently referable to Ulva gigantea (Kützing) Bliding (Silva, Meñez & Moe, 1987: 94). - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
