The type species (lectotype) of the genus Callithamnion is Callithamnion corymbosum (Smith) Lyngbye.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Spermothamnion cymosum (Harvey) De Toni.

Lectotype locality: Middleton Bay, King George Sound, Western Australia; (Womersley 1998: 225) Lectotype: On sand-covered rocks; Herb. Harvey, TCD; Alg. Aust. Exsicc. 524B (Womersley 1998: 225) Notes: Type locality: Rottnest Island, Western Australia (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 424). This type locality was first recorded by E. Gordon (1972: 117). Womersley (1998) notes that there is an isotype in AD, A18288.
