The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gymnodinium is Gymnodinium fuscum (Ehrenberg) F.Stein.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Amphidinium conradii J.Schiller.

Adjective (Latin), covered with a greyish bloom; blue-grey.
