Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Spongites fruticulosus Kützing.

Type locality: Mediterranean Sea; (Penrose 1996: 150) Lectotype: [Rösler et al. 2016: 421,fig. 2] (epitype) Rhodolith growing on another unidentified sterile coralline; L; L943.8-134 (Penrose 1996: 150) Notes: Lectotypified with tetrasporangial plant by Basso & Rodondi (2006). Penrose in Womersley (1996: 277) gives the following data: type from Mediterranean Sea; holotype in L (943, 8-134) illustrated by Woelkerling (1985, figs 23-32) and Penrose (1991, figs 1-3). Epitype: specimen with herbarium voucher GDA61338 from the eastern coast of Spain; 19/10/2010/ Almería, Spain/Cala Chumba/5-10 m/A. Rösler.
