Type locality: Mediterranean Sea; (Penrose 1996: 150) Lectotype: [Rösler et al. 2016: 421,fig. 2] (epitype) Rhodolith growing on another unidentified sterile coralline; L; L943.8-134 (Penrose 1996: 150) Notes: Lectotypified with tetrasporangial plant by Basso & Rodondi (2006). Penrose in Womersley (1996: 277) gives the following data: type from Mediterranean Sea; holotype in L (943, 8-134) illustrated by Woelkerling (1985, figs 23-32) and Penrose (1991, figs 1-3). Epitype: specimen with herbarium voucher GDA61338 from the eastern coast of Spain; 19/10/2010/ Almería, Spain/Cala Chumba/5-10 m/A. Rösler.

Distributional note
Specimens supposedly representing Lithothamnion fruticulosum from Ireland (Roundstone, Co. Galway; Johnson & Hensman, 1899) and Cornwall (distributed by Holmes as Algae Britannicae Rariores Exsiccatae nos 292, 262) were found to be Lithophyllum fasciculatum and, probably, Phymatolithon calcareum by Irvine & Chamberlain (1994: 177). - (11 May 2006) - G.M.
