The type species (holotype) of the genus Hydrocoryne is Hydrocoryne spongiosa Schwabe ex Bornet & Flahault.

Eponomy
Named for "... Spanish algologist Antonio Quesada, who contributed substantially to the knowledge of the Antarctic microflora of cyanobacteria."
