The type species (holotype) of the genus Chondria is Chondria tenuissima (Withering) C.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Corynecladia elata (C.Agardh) Cassano, M.C.Oliveira & M.T.Fujii

[15391]Type locality: King Island, Bass Strait, Australia (Silva & al. 1996: 508). Holotype: LD, Herb. Agardh 37235 (Womersley 2003: 477). Notes: Isotype in PC (Womersley, 2003: 477).
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), pinnately cleft (Stearn 1973).
