Nomenclatural note
Nitophyllum distromaticum J.J.Rodríguez (1889), the intended basionym of this species, is an invalid name (no description); therefore the publication of this name by Boudouresque (1971) should be regarded as the description of a new species rather than a new combination. According to Art. 37.3 of I.C.B.N. as modified at the XVI International Botanical Congress (St. Louis, Missouri, 26-30 July 1999; Barrie & Greuter, 1999), the species was validly described since two specimens that are part of a single gathering were indicated as Holotype (Furnari et al., 1999). - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Taxonomic note
Because of the occurrence of a single parietal, plate-like fenestrate plastid per cell, the species does not seem to fall within the circumscription of the genus Myriogramme as defined by Hommersand & Fredericq (1997). In absence of fertile specimens, the generic position of this species remains uncertain (Furnari et al., 1999). - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
