Source of Synonymy

Basionym
Jania adhaerens J.V.Lamouroux

Type Information
Type locality: Mediterranean (?); (Lamouroux 1816: 270) Lectotype: CN; (Johansen 1971: 247) Notes: Type stated by Lamouroux to be from the Mediterranean Sea, but with some uncertainty. "Lamouroux (1816, p. 270) described J. adhaerens as a distinct species on the basis of material donated by the Italian botanist G. B. Balbis (Stafleu and Mennega 1992, pp. 287-289) that was indicated (with a question mark) to originate from the Mediterranean Sea." (Harvey, Woelkerling & Harvey 2020: 248). "In 1960, A. B. Cribb annotated the material shown here in Fig. 17A as the type; his annotation label is depicted in Fig. 17C. However, this designation was not effectively published (see ICN Art. 7.10, 31.1; Turland et al. 2018) until Johansen (1971, p. 247) affirmed Cribb’s annotation in print. Because the original material (ICN Art. 9.4; Turland et al. 2018) available to Lamouroux comprised more than one specimen, the specimen annotated by Cribb is the lectotype (ICN Art. 9.3; Turland et al. 2018), whereas the other specimens in the same original folder are remaining syntypes (ICN Art 9.6; Turland et al. 2018). Although Cribb (1983, p. 47), subsequently, provided some further general information about the material in CN, no detailed study or figures of the type have been published." (Harvey, Woelkerling & Harvey 2020: 248).
