Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Boreolithothamnion soriferum (Kjellman) P.W.Gabrielson, Maneveldt, Hughey & V.Peña.

Type locality: Massö (Måsøy), Finnmark, Norway; (Peña & al. 2021: 11) Lectotype (three specimens in single envelope): F.R. Kjellman; viii.1876; UPS; A648809 (Peña & al. 2021: 11) Notes: "Type: apparently not designated (Athanasiadis 1996: 45, who suggests with a question mark that type material is in UPS). TRH has at least two syntypes (C13-3185, C13-3200) identified by Kjellman." (Woelkering et al. 2005: 440). Norwegian Sea: near Tromsö; Finmark (INA).

Adjective (Latin), sorus-bearing (Stearn 1983).
