Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Cystoseira is Cystoseira concatenata (Linnaeus) C.Agardh.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ericaria brachycarpa (J.Agardh) Molinari & Guiry.

Taxonomic note
Cormaci et al. (1992) suggested that Cystoseira caespitosa and C. balearica are synonymous because the former is similar to plants of the latter with spine-like leaves, i.e. the “spring form” of C. balearica as suggested by Huvé & Pellegrini (1970). The similarity had also been noted by Roberts (1978). However, Giaccone in Ribera et al. (1992) treated C. balearica as a variety of C. brachycarpa and this opinion was followed by Garreta et al.
