Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gomphonema is Gomphonema acuminatum Ehrenberg.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gomphonema kalahariense Jeff.R.Stone & Kociolek.

Adjective A (Latin), swollen, especially on one side (Stearn 1973).
