The type species (holotype) of the genus Rhodymenia is Rhodymenia palmetta (Stackhouse) Greville.

Type information
Type locality: Ora atlantica Amer. bor. (in Lophura sp.) [Atlantic shores of North America] (Reinsch 1875: 64).

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), lobed or divided in the manner of an outspread hand with the sinuses between the lobes pointing to the place of attachment (Stearn 1973).
