Nomenclatural note
Furnari et al. (2003) and Serio et al. (2006: 137) cite the authority for this species as (J. Agardh) Feldmann-Mazoyer but the authority here is that of the paper in accordance with the ICN. Cormaci & al. (2023: 168) note that "When Mazoyer (1938: 322) proposed the above new combination, she quoted among the synonyms also Echinoceras tenellum Kützing, Tab. Phyc. XII, t. 90, o-g) (sic!) crediting that species to Kützing only [and not to (Kützing) Kützing], having ignored [that] that species was a new combination based on E. hystrix var. tenellum Kützing (1849: 681). Therefore, Mazoyer (1938: 322) definitely included the type of E. tenellum, namely the type of its basionym, E. hystrix var. tenellum Kützing in the synonymy of Ceramium ciliatum var. robustum. [At] the rank of varietas, the Kützing's 1849 epithet var. tenellum has priority over the Mazoyer's 1938 epithet var. robustum. Therefore C. ciliatum var. robustum is superfluous according to Art. 52.1 and Art. 52.2 of ICN (Turland et al., 2018), but because it has a legitimate basionym it isn't illegitimate, but incorrect according to Art. 52.4 of ICN (Turland et al., 2018). Athanasiadis (2016: 902 Note to Note 2) incor-rectly stated that Ceramium ciliatum var. robustum is a legitimate name according to Art. 11. 2. of ICN (Turland et al., 2018), ignoring that, as above mentioned, Mazoyer (1938: 322) definitely included the type of E. tenellum, namely the type of its basionym, E. hystrix var. tenellum Kützing in the synonymy of her variety. According to Art. 52.4 of ICN (Turland et al., 2018) C. ciliatum var. robustum could be corrected proposing a new combination based on E. hystrix var. tenellum Kützing. But, in absence of a critical study confirming that the nomenclatural type of E. hystrix var. tenellum is a synonym of Mazoyer%u2019s variety [see Art. 7.1 of ICN (Turland et al., 2018)], it doesn't seem appropriate to propose here any nomenclatural correction." - (11 May 2006) - G.M.
