This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Titanoderma pustulatum var. confine (P.Crouan & H.Crouan) Y.M.Chamberlain.

Nomenclatural note
Cormaci & Furnari (1987: 757) cited Dermatolithon litorale rather than the correct basionym, Lithophyllum litorale Suneson. However, Cormaci, Furnari & Alongi (2017: 257) comment: "This combination, proposed by Cormaci & Furnari (1987: 757), is considered as invalid either in INA (2017) or in AlgaeBase (Guiry & Guiry, 2017) because was indicated as basionym Dermatolithon litorale Suneson instead of Lithophyllum litorale Suneson. However, according to art. 41.6 of ICN (McNeill et al., 2012): "errors in the citation of the basionym...but not omissions (art. 41.5), do not preclude valid publication of a new combination". Moreover, it should be noted that both this combination and that one proposed by Boudouresque et Perret-Boudouresque (see above) were published in November 1987. However, because Ti. litorale after 1987 was first quoted by Soto & Conde (1989: 68) as Ti. litorale (Crouan et Crouan sic!) Boudouresque et Perret, according to art. 11.5 of ICN (McNeill et al., 2012), such a choice establishes priority for Boudouresque et Perret-Boudouresque's combination." - (11 June 2012) - M.D. Guiry
Taxonomic note
According to Babbini & Bressan (1997) this species is a synonym of Titanoderma pustulatum var. confine (P. & H. Crouan) Chamberlain. Treated as taxonomically valid by Athanasiadis (2016: 307). - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
