The type species (holotype) of the genus Hymenocladia is Hymenocladia usnea (R.Brown ex Turner) J.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Hymenocladia chondricola (Sonder) J.A.Lewis.

Lewis, J.A. (1994). Transfer of the Australian red algae Kallymenia nitophylloides to Cryptonemia (Halymeniaceae) and Halymenia chondricola to Hymenocladia (Rhodymeniaceae). Taxon 43: 3-10, 12 figs.
